Please consider donating to the Protect Pentwater Harbor Fund to assist with dredging this spring. The mouth of the Pentwater Channel is in need of dredging. The channel that provides the connection fills with sand, and has required dredging almost every year for at least 30 years. In the past, the dredging has been funded by the federal government. It seems very unlikely that such funding will be available this year, and very uncertain about future years.
A group of private Pentwater area citizens are working to determine the extent of the problem, and to generate the approximately $50,000 that will be required to dredge this year. Some of these funds must come from local governments, but it will also be necessary to obtain private donations. Contributions that qualify as a 501c3 contribution can be made through The Community Foundation for Oceana County. To donate with a credit card online at www.oceana-foundation.org/dredging.
Checks should be made out to "Community Foundation for Oceana County" with a memo of "Protect Pentwater Harbor Fund" These can be mailed to

Pentwater Jr/Sr High students participate weekly in a schoolwide article activity that has been selected by different staff members. Thesecurrent event articles are chosen by different teachers for the entire studentbody each week and require students to take a look at the world around them andwrite about their thoughts, opinions, and challenges them to take a stand. One of the recent articles was put out by anorganization called Invisible Children. They have done two Youtube videos on Joseph Kony. Kony is an overlord that has committed horrificcrimes against the people of Africa. Studentshad a list of activities that they could participate in to use their voice. This is a brief summary by Savannah Slickers,a 9th grade student, of what this video meant to her.
“In our English class we have been learning about JosephKony. We watched a video about Kony2012. It was one of the mostinteresting, inspiring, and sadly horrible videos I have ever seen. It shows the monstrosities of Kony and hisarmies in Africa. It makes you thinkabout the privileges that we have. In myopinion this was a great video to show our class. It shows teens like us that we can truly helpand make a difference in this world.”
I feel this is very insightful for a 15 year oldstudent. |

On Wednesday, Erika Fatura's high school forensic science class took a field trip to the Kent County Scientific Support Unit. While there, they were broken into three teams to gain further knowledge in the forensic science fields of footwear impressions, gunshot reconstruction, video analysis and fingerprinting. The students were also able to tour the Kent County Jail and get a first hand look at what life is like for the inmates. It was a great opportunity for the students to see real life applications to the topics they have been studying in class.
Our Quiz Bowl team competed at the state competition held at Michigan State University. It was a double elimination tournament and split on the first day and were knocked out of the competition on Saturday. I am very proud of our students for all of their accomplishments this year.
The annual high school prom also took place this weekend. A big thank you to the Pentwater Yaht Club for allowing our Junior Class to host the event there. |
